Sales and Marketing Tip – Be Sure Your Customer Has All the Components They Need

When selling a FUELAB Prodigy Series Fuel Pump, be sure to discuss the other components your customer will need for their fuel system. A proper pre-filter, post pump filter, check valve, and fuel pressure regulator are recommended.


Often called “Straining Filters”, these coarse filters are responsible for preventing debris in the fuel from being able to lock-up or damage the fuel pump. The filters are typically very coarse in nature, particularly in high flow applications. This filter is coarse, not just to reduce pressure drop, but to ensure that fine debris will not begin to block flow over time. FUELAB uses a 75 micron rating for its straining filters (including the in-tank filter Model 83801). FUELAB also recommends the filter rating be between 75 and 150 microns for the “Pre – Pump” filter, when using FUELAB pumps.


The “Post – Pump” filter is typically the filter that is replaced on vehicles as part of normal maintenance, while straining filters are typically installed inside the fuel tank itself (and not a part of normal maintenance). Considerations for this filter include:

  • Fuel Type.  Filter material or media can have compatibility issues.  Use of fuels like E-85 can causes problems with normal “paper” filters.  Be sure that the filter you use is compatible with the fuel you intend to use.
  • Filtration.  The micron rating relates to the size of the particle that is blocked (or stopped, depending on the type of rating).  The finer (smaller the value) the filter is, the smaller the particles of debris that get filtered.
  • Capacity.  Filters can have two ratings with respect to capacity.  Sometimes they are given a general flow rating, or simply demonstrate the total filter surface area.  It may be obvious, but worth noting:  In general the larger the filter is, the larger the capacity.  Having larger filters can help reduce maintenance frequency as well as improve flow capacity.

Check Valve

Typically only beneficial for EFI fuel systems, these valves help maintain fuel pressure in the fuel rail after the pump and injectors shut down. This gives two advantages:

  • Maintain pressure during engine cooling to help prevent vaporizing of fuel in rail (reduce evaporative emissions). This has an additional benefit of maintaining liquid fuel in the rail, the next time the engine is started.
  • Aid in keeping pressure during engine starting, required in some applications that turn off fuel pump during engine starting or cranking.

Check valves allow fuel to pass through in one direction, while preventing flow in the opposite direction. In order to maintain pressure, the fuel pressure regulator and fuel injectors must also have very low, or no appreciable internal leakage. While most aftermarket check valves are not methanol or ethanol compatible, all FUELAB Check Valves are effective for gasoline, diesel, methanol, ethanol and other oxygenated fuels. To make plumbing simpler, and reduce overall system costs, FUELAB has designed check valves integrated with the filter assembly. The integration gives an advantage of having a check valve that is protected by the filter, and reduces the number of components required to plumb the fuel system. All check valves must be used downstream of the fuel pump, to avoid cavitation. Options include

  • 848xx Series – for -6AN and -8AN sizes (our standard flow) / 3″L Filter Elements
  • 858xx Series – for -8AN and -10AN size (our high flow) / 5″L Filter Elements
    • FUELAB recommends the 858xx Series Filter/Check valve model for all systems with pump ratings over 105 GPM.

The replaceable or cleanable filter elements can be tailored to your customer’s fuel requirements, including filter elements that are appropriate for pump and racing gasoline, E-85 or Methanol.

Fuel Pressure Regulator

Precise fuel pressure regulators are a necessary component for proper function of a modern fuel delivery system. Discuss with your customer the goals and intended use of their fuel delivery system to determine which style, and particular regulator model, is best for them.
